Woman pleads guilty to embezzlement

Linda Marie Eddy, 41, who worked for the school district for about 12 years, faces sentencing June 12 in El Dorado County Superior Court. Prosecutors say she could face up to five years in prison.

The embezzlement was discovered by Eddy's supervisor, Pat Howard, who opened a bank statement and saw a canceled check made out to Eddy that appeared to have a forged signature.

Eddy later admitted to taking the money from 1995 to 1997, saying she had personal finance problems.

Superintendent Rich Alexander said the school district was covered for the loss by insurance except for a $5,000 deductible, and the claim hasn't raised the district's insurance rates.

Alexander also said supervisors are now double-checking all accounting practices, and the district's local checking account was closed and all bills are now paid through the county office in Placerville.
