Letter: Justice may happen for ‘notch babies’

Being born between 1917 and 1926, we were discriminated against by substantially lower Social Security benefits.

I came into this world in 1925. I'm now 72 years young. This wasn't my idea. My parents wanted a child, just like everyone else.

We in this age group were called to fight in World War II. I made a tour of Europe in an infantry division in Patton's Third Army. For three years, I put my life on hold because I felt it to be the honorable thing to do.

Rep. Mark Neumann, R-Wis., has sponsored the Notch Fairness Act, which will make amends or correct the injustice, which really hurts.

For 10 years, we have been shorted $80 a month -- $9,600 -- but it's better than nothing. So I'm still down $4,000, even with the $5,000 proposed in the act.

I worked all my life and paid Social Security tax. I don't want a hand-out. I want my money that's just due me.

Worst is the respect we got from our country. We notchers who are left feel depressed and hurt to think that we put our lives on the line and left our dead comrades over there, only to come back to this outrageous experience.

If you want to help, call your congressman urging him to support the passage of HR3008, the Notch Fairness Act.
