Council approves recycled water for golf courses

Starting in the year 2000, the city of Las Vegas will be using recycled water for the maintenance of golf courses.

The City Council approved an agreement with the Las Vegas Valley Water District to build, construct, own and operate a recycled water treatment facility, which will be at the northwest corner of Cheyenne Avenue and Durango Road. The facility will be called the Northwest Water Resource Center.

The underground piping and pump stations will be owned and operated by the water district, which will deliver the recycled, or reclaimed, water to customers.

The project will cost the city about $30 million, and should take about 24 months to finish. Once completed, the facility will produce 5 million gallons of reclaimed water a day.

Reclaimed water is treated water that's not drinkable, but can still be used for watering plants and grasses.

The plan for the facility still needs final approval from the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection, which is expected to give it a thumbs up in the coming weeks.
