Columnist Brian Hilderbrand: Keever shines at Pac-10 event

Former Cimarron-Memorial High standout Stephanie Keever of Stanford finished tied for 13th place at the 12th annual Pacific-10 Conference Women's Golf Championships held recently in Southern California.

Keever rebounded from an opening-round 6-over-par 78 at Tijeras Creek Golf Club in Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., and shot rounds of 72 and 74 to finish at 8-over-par 224. Keever finished nine shots behind champion Jenna Daniels of Arizona.

Arizona won the team title for the second year in a row while Stanford finished in sixth place, 55 shots behind the Wildcats. Arizona led the tournament wire-to-wire and its 54-hole total of 865 was the second-lowest team score in conference history.

Another local product, Julie Dunn from Bonanza High, shot a 30-over-par 246 for Stanford and tied for 47th place in the individual standings. Dunn overcame an opening-round score of 89 and posted scores of 78 and 79 on the 6,120-yard Tijeras Creek course, the home course of the University of Southern California.

* SENIOR LEFTOVERS: Thanks to his seventh-place tie in last weekend's Las Vegas Senior Classic, local pro Jim Colbert remained the all-time leading money winner in LVSC history. Colbert has won $484,001 in eight Senior Classic appearances, including his two wins in 1995 and 1996. With his second consecutive victory in Las Vegas, Hale Irwin vaulted into second place in LVSC all-time earnings with $360,000. Chi Chi Rodriguez, another two-time winner, dropped from second to third with $312,475 and Bob Charles slipped from third to fourth with $304,987. ... Charles' 40th-place tie last weekend marked the second straight year he has finished out of the top 10 in Las Vegas but only the fourth time he has finished lower than 10th in 12 appearances here. ... This year marked the seventh time the Las Vegas Senior Classic has been decided by one shot.

* PALMER ACADEMY MOVING: The Arnold Palmer Golf Academy, currently located at The Oasis Golf Club in Mesquite, is moving to the Las Vegas International Golf Center (corner of Paradise Avenue and Tropicana Boulevard) on May 1. "We're really looking forward to having the Arnold Palmer Golf Academy here at the Golf Center," Eric Chivers, LVIGC general manager, said. "The name (Palmer) alone should attract people." * HIS WAY: The popular Frank Sinatra Celebrity Classic golf tournament is moving from Southern California to Las Vegas this year and will be held Friday, May 29 at Stallion Mountain Country Club. Among the sports and entertainment celebrities expected this year include Joe Theismann, Dan Marino, Don Meredith, Vida Blue, Rollie Fingers, Steve Garvey, Bruce Jenner, Steve Spurrier, Jeremy Roenick, Susan Anton, Daniel Baldwin, Chad Everett, Wayne Rogers, Jerry Vale and Robert Goulet. The Frank Sinatra Las Vegas Celebrity Classic benefits the Barbara Sinatra Children's Center and Las Vegas' Opportunity Village. * CHARITY TOURNAMENT: The 12th annual Glenn A. Hill Memorial Tournament to benefit the Helen J. Stewart School for Handicapped Children will be held June 7 at Summerlin's Palm Valley Golf Course. * UPCOMING EVENTS: The PGA Tour is in Texas this week for the Shell Houston Open at The TPC at The Woodlands. Phil Blackmar is the defending champion of the tournament; ABC will televise. ... The Senior PGA Tour moves on to Birmingham, Ala., for the Bruno's Memorial Classic at Greystone Golf Club. Jay Sigel won last year's tournament; ESPN will televise. ... The LPGA Tour is in Daytona Beach, Fla., for the Titleholders Championship at the LPGA International course. Tammie Green is the defending champion; CBS will televise.
