Armed man robs Showboat cashier

An armed man robbed a cashier inside the Showboat hotel-casino's main cashier cage just after midnight today.

The robber walked up to the cashier's window and gave the cashier a note demanding money, robbery Detective Dave Kissick said.

"He took it and ran," Kissick said.

Ed Eckels, director of security for the hotel, said the man "handed her a plastic grocery bag, gave her note, and told her to fill it with money."

The incident, "from the time he came on the property, through the robbery, until he exited the property, was captured on tape," Eckels said.

The man walked on and off of the property, at 2300 Fremont Street near Eastern Avenue, Eckels said. Three cashiers were on duty in the main cage when the robber walked up, he said.

Investigators have not released the exact amount of cash taken, but robbery Lt. John Alamshaw said, "It was in the thousands."

Eckels said the cashier followed the casino's procedures "exactly."

"We don't want any of our employees or guests to ever be injured or put in jeopardy," he said. "We give them (robbers) what ever they want and turn the case over to the police."
