Williams homers again, Ties PCL record

SUN STAFF REPORTS

CALGARY --- The Las Vegas Stars finish their eight-game road trip this afternoon here against the Calgary Cannons.

Nobody will be sadder about leaving Burns Stadium than Eddie Williams.

Williams, who set team records for home runs (four), RBIs (10) and total bases (17) in a game during a wild 20-15 victory here Wednesday night, made it into the Pacific Coast League record book with another home run in the Stars' 11-6 win over the Cannons Thursday night.

Williams, who was hit by a pitch in his first at-bat by Calgary starter Nelson Cruz, homered to right-center in his second at-bat against Cruz in the second inning. That meant that the 33-year-old designated hitter homered in five straight official at-bats over two games, tying the PCL mark set by Burt Ellison of the San Francisco Seals in 1924 and later equaled by former UNLV star Matt Williams in 1988 at Phoenix.

In addition, Williams was intentionally walked in the fourth, extending his streak of successfully reaching base to 10 in a row. That streak finally came to and end in the sixth when Cannons reliever Larry Casian managed to get Williams to fly out to deep left-center.

The Stars (9-6), who open an eight-game homestand at Cashman Field Saturday night against the Memphis Redbirds, also received big nights from third baseman George Arias (3-for-5, two homers, 5 RBIs), second baseman Greg LaRocca (2-for-4, HR, double) and first baseman Jason Thompson (3-for-5, two doubles, two RBIs) to back the solid pitching of right-hander Stan Spencer (3-0).

Meanwhile, pitcher Donne Wall (2-0, 4.80 ERA) got some good news Thursday when he was called up by the San Diego Padres to replace injured Mark Langston (elbow) on the roster.
