Letter: Neal needs to explain stand on nuclear waste
Friday, April 24, 1998 | 10:54 a.m.
Neal also wants to initiate negotiation for benefits that will arise out of any contractual obligation that Nevada will have to engage in if the federal government gives the OK to go ahead either in 2003 or ultimately 2010.
Neal is either privy to inside information or thinks he knows a good deal when he sees it. Who butters Neal's bread? Obviously the butter is coming from his ties and networking during 28 years working at the Nevada Test Site.
This unpopular stance for any other candidate would be political suicide, but Neal knows he has a card up his sleeve. In 1996, a University of Nevada poll reflected 73 percent of the people opposed Neal's position.
I think it is time Neal gave a better explanation for his position on the nuclear waste issue other than that it is inevitable, that it will happen.
I do not believe it will happen, and I do not believe Neal will see it happen.
