Head-on collision kills driver

Investigators are not sure why a Pahrump woman drove head-on into an oncoming car at 11:55 a.m. Thursday, killing herself and critically injuring the other driver in a two-car crash 24 miles south of Las Vegas.

The 59-year-old driver had been eastbound in her 1989 Toyota along State Route 160 when she crossed the solid line dividing the two-lane road near mile post 17 and crashed into a westbound 1985 Oldsmobile, driven by Robert Hobb, 65, of Pahrump, said Trooper Steve Harney, Nevada Highway Patrol spokesman.

Hobb was transported to University Medical Center and listed late Thursday in critical condition. His wife, Joyce, 58, was treated at the hospital and released. The Toyota's driver died about 30 minutes after arriving at UMC, Harney said.

Traffic along State Route 160 was slowed for more than two hours as motorists were deterred into the desert to get around the accident site.

Harney said there was no evidence of alcohol or speeding in connection with the crash.
