Plea deal ensures life in prison for killer of woman, son

The man charged with the murders of an elderly woman and her 49-year-old son will avoid the death penalty but won't ever get out of prison after a guilty plea to all charges.

Wednesday's deal will saddle Christopher Brumfield, 32, with eight life prison terms without the possibility of parole plus 60 years.

Brumfield pleaded guilty to two counts each of murder, robbery and kidnapping, all with the use of a deadly weapon which doubles the sentences. The murder and kidnapping charges account for the life terms while the robbery counts add the additional prison time.

Deputy District Attorney David Schwartz said the plea bargain was "the way the victims' family wanted to resolve this."

District Judge Donald Mosley will formally sentence Brumfield on June 15.

The victims' bodies were found in July after a concerned relative sent police to the 267 Pecos Way condominium near Pecos and Desert Inn roads.

Allen Kirisuk's body was found covered with blood in a living room closet. The body of his 80-year-old mother, Jean Stubbs, was found in an upstairs closet.

In court, Brumfield said he got into an argument with Kirisuk and stabbed him to death. When Stubbs arrived at the condominium she also was stabbed to death.

Brumfield had been a border in Kirisuk's home and the relationship was "troubled," police said.

Stubbs had been sent to check on Kirisuk at her daughter's request because she hadn't heard from him for a few days. When the mother didn't call back, the daughter notified police.

Three hours after the bodies were found by officers, the mother's missing car was stopped by traffic officers on Fairfield Street and Brumfield, who was driving, was arrested for the murders.
