Cancer Society offers free skin cancer screenings

The screenings are a part of "National Skin Cancer Awareness Month." Beginning May 21 and continuing every other Thursday through Aug. 27, local dermatologists will volunteer their time to provide free skin cancer screenings to area residents. For the 11th consecutive year, doctors will educate the public on the hazards of excessive exposure to the ultraviolet radiation of the sun, tanning beds and sun lamps.

This year's campaign is sponsored by Las Vegas Skin & Cancer Clinics and Schering Oncology Biotech. These medical professionals and the American Cancer Society recommend the following steps to minimize the sun's damage to the skin and eyes.

*Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

*Always wear a sun screen with a Sun Protection Factor of 15 or more.

*Wear protective covering such as long pants, broad-brimmed hats and sunglasses with 100 percent ultraviolet-ray protection.

To make an appointment for the May 4 screening or for later this summer, call 798-5938.
