A chronology of Greg Norman’s career

A chronological look at the career of golfer Greg Norman, who had arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder Wednesday.

Feb. 10, 1955: Born in Queensland, Australia.

1976: Turns professional.

1976: Wins first pro tournament, the Westlakes Classic in Australia.

1977: Plays in first major championship, British Open, and misses cut.

1979: Plays in first PGA Tour event in U.S.

1983: Joins PGA Tour full time.

1984: Wins first PGA Tour event, the Kemper Open.

1984: Loses U.S. Open in playoff to Fuzzy Zoeller.

1986: Leads all four major championships after three rounds. Wins British Open, finishes second in the Masters and the PGA Championship and 12th in the U.S. Open.

1987: Loses Masters in a playoff when Larry Mize chips in from 35 yards.

1989: Loses British Open in playoff won by Mark Calcavecchia.

1993: Wins British Open Royal at St. George's by two strokes over Nick Faldo when he shoots a 64 to Faldo's 67 in the final round.

1993: Loses PGA Championship in playoff with Paul Azinger and becomes first man to lose all four major championships in a playoff.

1995: Finishes second at U.S. Open.

1996: Finishes second in Masters by five strokes to Faldo after taking six-stroke lead into the final round. It is his eighth runnerup in a major championship and it is the largest lead ever squandered in a major.

1997: Misses cut at Masters ending a streak of 14 consecutive top-20 finishes in major championships.

1998: Withdraws from Players Championship because of sore left shoulder. Misses cut in Masters two week later. Has arthroscopic surgery April 22.
