Three attorneys make final list for judge

RENO -- Three attorneys, all in private practice, have been nominated by the state Judicial Selection Commission to succeed Clark County Family Court Judge Terrance Marren who resigned to become Mesquite's city attorney.

After interviewing seven applicants, the committee selected Kendal Sue Bird, 34, of Las Vegas; T. Arthur Ritchie, Jr., 36, of Henderson; and William Voy, 38, of Las Vegas.

Their names will be forwarded to Gov. Bob Miller who will make the final appointment. Marren's successor will have to run for election to the post in November.

If the governor fails to make a choice within 30 days, he may not make any other appointments to public office until the judgeship is filled.

Others Clark County lawyers interviewed by the commission, headed by Nevada Supreme Court Chief Justice Charles Springer, were Charles Hoskin, Elizabeth Kolkoski, Stephen Minagil and Randall Pike. Nicholas A. Del Vecchio had applied for the post but a spokeswoman said he did not show up for the interview.

The commission also named three nominees to succeed Washoe District Judge Mills Lane who is retiring to pursue a career in television.

They are: Gemma Green, 41, a deputy district attorney for Washoe County; Kevin Higgins, the head of the worker's compensation fraud unit in the office of the state attorney general; and Margaret Springgate, 43, who works for the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges. Springgate formerly served as the governor's legal counsel.

Lane, who gained fame as a boxing referee, will appear in a syndicated television show this fall similar to "The People's Court" in which he will decide cases. He also intends to set up a private law practice in Reno.
