Man wounded in Douglas County shootout

The 33-year-old man, whose name was not immediately released, was hit in the lower leg when the officers returned fire. He was taken to Carson-Tahoe Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, authorities said.

None of the officers involved in the Tuesday night shooting was injured.

Bob Rudnick, Douglas County chief deputy sheriff, said the gunfire broke out when officers responded to a reported domestic dispute between a mother and an adult son just after 6 p.m.

Sheriff's Sgt. Lance Modispacher said the son exited a trailer and began shooting at the officers. They fired back, wounding him in the lower leg, near the ankle.

Witnesses said they heard multiple shots. Two hours after the shootout, a rifle with an automatic-style clip and a black baseball cap lay in the gravel driveway of the trailer park.

Tenants at the nearby Sierra Motel told the Nevada Appeal that they heard multiple shots.

"I was on the phone and I heard my dogs bark, and then I heard shots and I was on the floor," said the motel manager, who asked not to be identified.

"At first I thought maybe it was somebody tapping on my glass.

"I could hear the officers yelling for him to drop his gun, but he was shooting back. I could tell by the sounds.

"It was too close for comfort."

A motel guest, who also declined to give his name, said he looked out his window and saw a female NHP trooper fire into the park. She was standing near a utility pole by the side of the northbound highway lanes, with the Douglas deputies flanking her, he said.

"She didn't hesitate. She just pulled that pistol and fired," he said.

The names of the officers involved were not immediately released. They were put on routine administrative leave pending a review of the incident, which is standard when on-duty officers are involved in shooting incidents.
