Henderson OKs cycle dealer

HENDERSON -- A sole protester and an opposing City Council member weren't enough Tuesday to keep a Harley Davidson shop from moving onto East Sunset Road adjacent to the Whitney Ranch neighborhood.

The Council approved 4-1 the repair and sales store on the condition that test-driving routes never enter the residential area.

The requirement wasn't enough to satisfy Councilmember Jack Clark, who cast the only dissenting vote.

"I don't know how many more inappropriate uses we can find for this neighborhood," Clark said. "Maybe a topless bar or tattoo parlor would further enhance this neighborhood."

Kathy Rosenfield, who lives in the Whitney Ranch subdivision, was the only resident to address the Council Tuesday. She argued that when people buy homes in the country's fastest growing community, they never know what will be built on the undeveloped land that surrounds them.

But, she added, they buy homes because they have confidence the city will have good judgment.

"Trust is put into the City Council to make sure what develops around people isn't a detriment to their neighborhood," she said. "People have the right not to have their lifestyle infringed upon by a noisy applicant like this."

Aside from testing motorcycles on Sunset Road, the owners' attorney, John Marchiano, said once the bikes are on the property, their engines will be killed and the motorcycles pushed into the shop.

City Councilwoman Amanda Cyphers expressed concern about the amount of traffic the store may generate, but added she would have the same problem if a library moved in.

Cyphers indicated her vote may have been swayed had more angry residents shown up at the Council meeting.

"None of the neighbors that abut you are here tonight, which tells me they welcome you as a new neighbor," Cyphers told the owners' representative.
