Woman, son hurt in car bombing

The sheriff's department didn't immediately identify the 34-year-old woman, who was seriously injured by shrapnel that hit her lower back. She was taken to Washoe Medical Center in Reno for surgery.

The 12-year-old boy suffered leg wounds and was treated and released at Carson-Tahoe Hospital. The 13-year-old was unharmed.

A preliminary investigation indicates the bomb "was somewhat sophisticated in nature and had been placed in the vehicle for the express purpose of causing death or serious bodily harm," Chief Deputy Bill Callahan said.

The sheriff's department will investigate the case as a triple murder attempt, Callahan said, adding that his department is seeking help from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms.
