Holocaust exhibit at LVAM
Tuesday, April 21, 1998 | 9:03 a.m.
The event will run from April 22 to May 24 at the Las Vegas Art Museum, 9600 W. Sahara Ave.
The Holocaust art and education exhibition will encompass several galleries at the museum. It will open to the public at no charge through a gift from Judge Gilbert and Edythe Katz-Yarchever and Lottie and Jerry Polis.
The invitational is the centerpiece of this museum-wide event. Two dozen paintings by Arie Lagstein, an Israeli Holocaust survivor, have been shipped from Israel for the occasion. Another show of two dozen paintings by Austrian artist Wolfgang Ritschel celebrates the 3,000th anniversary of Jerusalem. Also included in the exhibit are several pieces from the collection of local artist Roy Purcell.
Other sections of the overall exhibition include "Eli Leskley: Ghetto Diary," 30 original watercolors, with later re-creations first executed while Leskley was a detainee in the Terezin transit camp, 1942-1945. Another show, "Holocaust Series," consists of collages of photographs and paintings by Alfred Benjamin. Both these exhibitions are on loan from the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust. Several more works will be loaned by George Krevsky Fine Arts of San Francisco.
During the entire month of exhibitions, there will be educational programs for public schools, lectures, receptions, meetings and related events. For scheduling information, call the Holocaust office, 732-0556. To schedule an evening event, call the museum, 360-8000.
