Former teacher pleads no contest to embezzlement charge

Janice Morgan entered the plea to a felony embezzlement charge last week in District Court. She faces up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine when sentenced May 18 by Judge David Huff.

District Attorney Robert Estes said Morgan embezzled the funds from 1990 to 1997 while she was the council's treasurer.

Defense attorney Jack Sheehan said she already has repaid more than $12,000 to the group.

Morgan entered the plea as part of a plea bargain agreement. Terms of the agreement were not immediately disclosed.
