City officials think theater company wants too much
Monday, April 20, 1998 | 10:25 a.m.
Some city officials think so and say they are ready to consider another proposal for another development firm.
Syufy, the parent company of Century Theaters, owns the $15 million Victorian Theater that anchors city's redevelopment plan. The theater is to open on Thursday.
Last year the city agreed to negotiate exclusively with Syufy for development of shops and restaurants to complete the plaza, but the two sides have not been able to agree on details.
Mayor Bruce Breslow said he plans to ask the City Council to consider other proposals at its April 27 meeting.
"I think that fact that Reno gave away their land and paid $8 million for a theater affected Syufy's approach to Sparks," Breslow said. "They wanted other concessions to do the project. I thought that would be giving away the farm."
