State panel rejects regulation that would have affected nurses

The Legislative Commission unanimously voted Friday against new nursing eligibility requirements endorsed March 5 by the Nevada State Board of Nursing.

To qualify for a general license under the proposal, a nurse would have been required to "sit, stand, bend, squat, twist, walk, lift and reach for extended periods."

About 2,500 nurses and health professionals signed postcards protesting the requirements, saying they were unfair and discriminatory.

Some testified Friday that the regulation would hurt experienced nurses because they often suffer back problems from years of helping patients.

"It sounds more to me like a screen test for Hercules movies," nurse Dorothy Riley said. "Nursing is more cerebral than brawn."
