Townsend, others detail election plans

Townsend, 51, cited the deregulation measure, his efforts to set up a consumer advocate for utility customers and a bill to improve mental health services in announcing his plans.

Townsend is part of the Senate leadership team headed by Majority Leader Bill Raggio, R-Reno. He began his legislative career in 1982 as a Democrat but switched parties and ran as a Republican in 1986.

Other legislative candidates include Democrat Elizabeth Harrison, a counselor and Palomino Valley resident, who is challenging Assemblyman Don Gustavson, R-Sun Valley, for his District 32 seat.

Harrison says she would put her work experience into solving the state's social problems brought on by substance abuse. She also wants to work on education reforms and managed health-care issues.

Also running is Incline Village resident Riho Saffen, seeking fellow Republican Pete Ernaut's seat in the Nevada Assembly.

Ernaut, serving as campaign manager for gubernatorial candidate Kenny Guinn, isn't seeking re-election to the District 37 seat. Another Incline Village resident, Randi Thompson, also has announced her candidacy.
