Stars beat Vancouver

SUN STAFF REPORTS

VANCOUVER, B.C. --- The Las Vegas Stars began their eight-game road trip here Thursday night two men short because starting outfielder Ruben Rivera and relief ace Dario Veras didn't have the proper visas to enter Canada.

Luckily for Jerry Royster and company, outfielder Charles Poe, catcher Mandy Romero and pitchers Donne Wall and Brian Tollberg didn't have any such problems.

Romero was a perfect 3-for-3 with three doubles, a run scored and a RBI while Poe added another double and his first home run of the year while scoring twice. They backed the standout pitching of Wall and Tollberg as Las Vegas spoiled Vancouver's home opener, 3-1, at Nat Bailey Stadium.

Wall upped his record with to 2-0 by allowing just five hits and one run in seven innings. Tollberg, recently called up from double-A Mobile, earned his first save by getting the final two outs after coming in with the tying runs on first and second.

Stars designated hitter Eddie Williams extended his hitting streak to six games with three more hits in four at-bats. Williams has 13 hits in his last 25 at-bats (.520).

Team officials said they were hopeful that Rivera and Veras would have their visa situation straightened out in time to join the team in time for tonight's game.
