Planning board formed to help manage growth

The Southern Nevada Government Efficiency Committee, previously a little-known committee of elected officials from Clark County and five cities in its borders, is now the Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition.

Though the membership of the committee won't be changed -- it's made up of officials from Boulder City, Henderson, Las Vegas, North Las Vegas (two each) and three Clark County commissioners -- the scope of the coalition's responsibilities will be altered.

The specifics of its role is yet to be determined, but the coalition did approve a resolution Thursday outlining these general functions:

Las Vegas Mayor Jan Laverty Jones and City Councilman Arnie Adamsen were both unable to attend Thursday's meeting, and wrote a letter last week to the coalition, asking the item be held for their input.

The coalition approved another structural change by approving the formation of the Public Land Commission -- a proposal that was presented by Clark County Commissioner Lance Malone.

Malone, who presented the same idea to the Southern Nevada Strategic Planning Authority last week, asked the coalition to not only approve the formation of the commission but to make the PLC a subcommittee of the planning coalition.

The coalition unanimously approved his request. The PLC will meet twice a year. Malone is uncertain when the first meeting will be held.

The next meeting of the planning coalition will be April 28.
