One charter school possible for ‘98-‘99

Holly Walton-Buchanan said Thursday another group of parents from Sandy Valley who want to start one of the experimental schools for their high school-age children won't be ready in time for the 1998-99 school year.

The Washoe County group, led by casino executive Ian Hill, has a building donated for use as a school. And the administrator of the proposed school, which would focus on computer training and the culinary arts, has run a charter school in Arizona.

Four groups initially expressed an interest in forming a charter school, but only the Reno application was deemed complete. Its letter of intent has been forwarded to the Washoe County School District for action.

Other groups could still come forward with a charter school proposal. A key deadline is July 1, when school districts need to know how many students they'll have for the 1998-99 school year for budget purposes.

The department is trying to be as flexible as possible this year because it's the first that groups could seek permission to create a charter school, Walton-Buchanan said.

The 1997 Legislature approved a charter school law, which allows 21 of the experimental schools to be established statewide for traditional students and an unlimited number for at-risk students.
