Letter: Founding fathers and their views on religion

Here is a fine example of the failure of our public schools. Good grief: This man claims our founding fathers' intent was not Christian in their views. All one needs to do is to read their writings. Examples:

Benjamin Franklin proposed a day of fasting and prayer for Pennsylvania that starts. He wrote: "It is the duty of mankind on all suitable occasions to acknowledge their dependence on the divine Being. ... " and continues extolling the virtues of a country relying on God.

Samuel Adams: "The right to freedom being a gift of the almighty. ... The rights of the colonists as Christians. ..."

John Adams: "The 2nd day of July 1776 will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America ... commemorated as the day of deliverance by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty from one end of the continent to the other. ... "

Alexander Hamilton: " ... without the finger of God, never could have been suggested and agreed upon such a diversity of interests" speaking about the Constitution draft.

There are so many other people -- Andrew Jackson, Thomas Jefferson, Madison Paine -- whose writings burst with their faith in God of the Old and New Testaments. Read Abraham Lincoln's March 30, 1863, proclamation appointing a national fast day.

I leave you with my favorite, Patrick Henry ("Give me Liberty or give me Death," does that ring a bell?). This famous revolutionary leader declared, "It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this nation was founded, not by religionists but by Christians; not on religions but on the gospel of Jesus Christ. For this very reason, peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity and freedom of worship here."

I rest my case.
