Israel anniversary to be celebrated

The Jewish Federation of Las Vegas will begin celebrating the 50th anniversary of Israel Sunday at the Sands Expo and Convention Center.

The celebration will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will include live performances, exhibits, crafts, information booths, children's activities, Israeli cuisine and more.

Admission is free.

Natan Sharansky, Israel's minister of Industry and Trade, will be the featured speaker at a dinner to be held at the New York-New York hotel-casino ballroom following the celebration.

Cost of the dinner is $65 per person.

Sharansky is a graduate of the Physical Technical Institute of Moscow, Russia. He emigrated to Israel in 1986 and in 1996 was elected to the Israeli Knesset. His party won seven seats and he was appointed minister of Industry and Trade.

The singer Noa, one of Israel's best-known performers, will sing in the Madhattan Theater at 9 p.m.

Noa is an internationally renowned singer, songwriter, composer and percussionist who recently released her second English-language album, "Calling."

She was born in Israel but grew up in the Bronx in New York City, attending New York's High School of Performing Arts.

She and collaborator Dor perform at festivals, clubs, auditoriums and universities.

According to the Israel Record, which is published by the Anti-Defamation League, Israel is a "gathering place for exiles."

Between 1948 and 1951, more than 688,000 immigrants moved to Israel, doubling the existing population.
