County sues company for failing to pay phone bills

County Commissioners authorized Deputy District Attorney Bruce Matley to file the suit and to seek a court order allowing the seizure of telephone equipment belonging to Inmate Communications Corp. of Van Nuys, Calif.

Matley told the commissioners that the company has not been making timely payments to Churchill County Telephone and has owed more than $4,000 in past due accounts on two separate occasions.

The county and the sheriff's office contracted with Inmate Communications in 1993 to provide phone equipment at the jail, the Lahontan Valley News and Fallon Eagle Standard reported.

The special equipment is needed at the detention center to block calls to victims, witnesses, police and judges.

Jail officials are providing emergency service through the local phone company to comply with constitutional mandates that inmates have telephone access to lawyers and bail bond companies.
