Corraro fired by women’s coach

Steve Corraro, director of basketball operations for the UNLV women's basketball program for the past five seasons, said he has been fired by new Lady Rebels head coach Regina Miller.

"Regina called me in and told me, 'I hired someone in your position,'" Corraro said Thursday.

Corraro served as the Lady Rebels' interim coach for the final seven games of the season after head coach LaDonna McClain resigned under pressure Feb. 2.

Corraro claimed that after Miller was hired last week, he was told by UNLV athletic director Charles Cavagnaro that he would have an opportunity to interview for a position as one of Miller's assistants.

"I talked to Charlie and he said that if it didn't work out with (Miller) ... that they would move me to another job or create a job for me somewhere at the university," Corraro said.

Now, Corraro said he is not sure he will have a position with the university after his contract expires on June 30.

"I kind of thought I'd get another job with the university but I don't know," Corraro said. "I'm told now we're in a budget deficit and, realistically, there's not a chance in hell right now (that they will create a position for me). I'm kind of in limbo right now.

"I'm the type of person who, what people tell me, I take to faith ... this hurts."

Miller was not available for comment and Cavagnaro did not return a phone message left at his office.

David Chambers, associate athletics director and Corraro's supervisor, referred questions concerning Corraro's situation to Cavagnaro.

"If I did something wrong, I'd like to know," Corraro said. "I have always tried to do what's best for the program, even helping out in a bad situation (when McClain resigned). I've been here seven years ... and this is disappointing after all the time I put in here."

Corraro just concluded his fifth season with the Lady Rebels and his first as director of basketball operations. His responsibilities included setting up the team's travel, scheduling practice time, game management, scouting and assisting with recruiting.
