The Donald W. Reynolds Foundation has donated $5.2 million to the American Press Institute in Reston, Va.
API, founded in 1946, is the largest and oldest organization devoted solely to the training of mid-career newspaper professionals and journalism educators. It will use the Reynolds Foundation donation to restore its existing buildings and construct an addition.
"API is a beloved organization in the newspaper industry, and this magnificent gift will ensure that the institute's headquarters facility offers attendees and staff the most modern and functional working environment possible," said William Burleigh, president and chief executive officer of Scripps Howard and chairman of the API board of directors.
Reynolds' communications organization carried his name in short form -- Donrey Media Inc. Reynolds, who died in 1993, left his estate to the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation, which today has assets of about $1.3 billion. The Las Vegas Review-Journal is a Donrey newspaper.
