Panel decides museum should stay at LV park

The recommendation goes to the 1999 Legislature, along with a request for budget allotments for the museum's operations.

Assemblywoman Chris Giunchigliani, D-Las Vegas, made the motion that was endorsed Wednesday by the five-member subcommittee.

To boost museum patronage, Giunchigliani suggested lobbying the Legislature to use part of the state's hotel room tax to pay for a marketing campaign.

She also said the Clark County School District should be encouraged to increase school tours. Last year, the museum attracted 25,300 visitors, down from 61,700 in 1989.

Boulder City had been considered because of its proximity to Hoover Dam, which draws more than 1 million visitors a year. But panel members questioned whether that would accomplish the goal of attracting more Las Vegans.
