Obituaries for April 16, 1998

Marjorie Alice Barnwell, 84, of Henderson died Monday. She was born Oct. 13, 1913, in Calgary, Alberta. A resident for 44 years, she was a retired hospital nurse, a receptionist at Palm Mortuary for 17 years, a member of the Ferndale Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile.

She is survived by two sons, Roy Walker of Las Vegas and Eric Walker of Henderson; one brother, Ted Vincent of Vancouver, British Columbia; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be 3 p.m. Sunday in Palm Mortuary, 1325 N. Main St. Graveside services will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday in Palm Memorial Park.

NETTIE THOMPSON BEAVERS

Nettie Thompson Beavers, 75, of Las Vegas died Tuesday in a local health care center. She was born March 21, 1923, in North Carolina. A resident for 30 years, she was a retired social worker, a member of the Unity Baptist Church choir, Naomi Circle of the Women's Ministry and Missions Ministry and a deacon in training at the church.

She is survived by her husband, Hugh J.; two sons, Marlon Beavers of Tucson, Ariz., and Darrell Beavers of Las Vegas; five sisters, Velma Sneed of Hillsborough, N.C., Verline Rogers of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Delores Marks, Bettye Johnson and Peggy Wright, all of Fort Washington, Md.; and seven grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. services today in Unity Baptist Church, 545 Marion Drive. Additional services and burial will be in North Carolina. Palm Mortuary, 1325 N. Main St., is handling arrangements.

JOANN FENNER

JoAnn Fenner, 56, of Las Vegas died Sunday in Las Vegas. She was born Sept. 15, 1941, in Fort Worth, Texas. A resident for 10 years, she was a hotel-casino bookkeeper for 10 years.

She is survived by two daughters, Debbie Trudell of Las Vegas and Rene Rice of Fort Worth, Texas; one son, Chris Fenner, and one brother, Loy Cook, both of Las Vegas; and three grandsons.

A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Friday in the First Congregational Church, 1200 N. Eastern Ave. Nevada Funeral Service-Nevada Cremation or Burial Society, 2121 Western Ave., Suite A-3, is handling arrangements.

OMA FOX

Oma Fox, 87, of Las Vegas died Monday in a local convalescent center. She was born Dec. 10, 1910, in Lettsworth, La. A resident for 59 years, she was a retired hotel kitchen helper.

She is survived by one daughter, Naomi Tucker of Las Vegas; and two sons, Belford Fox of Las Vegas and Jerry Fox of Bakersfield, Calif.; 77 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 20 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday in Palm Mortuary, 1325 N. Main St. Services will be noon Saturday in the Greater New Jerusalem Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Park. Palm Mortuary, 1600 S. Jones Blvd., is handling arrangements.

WILLIAM GATES

William Gates, 55, of Las Vegas died Friday in a local hospital. He was born Aug. 8, 1942, in Tallulah, La. A resident for 35 years, he was a sanitation worker for Silver State Disposal Service.

He is survived by two sons, Ronnie J. McKinsey and Christopher Gates, both of Las Vegas; one daughter, Janis Lawrence of Monroe, La.; his father, Reuben Oliver of Tallulah; three brothers, Alonzo Oliver and Larry Oliver, both of Tallulah, and James Oliver of Hawaii; two sisters, Gloria Oliver of Hawaii and Carrie Oliver Jr. of Tallulah; and seven grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled 2-5 p.m. Friday in American Burial and Cremation Services, 310 Foremaster Lane. Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday in American Burial and Cremation Services. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.

FRANK J. GIANNETTE

Frank J. Giannette, 66, of Las Vegas died Monday in Las Vegas. He was born Feb. 8, 1932, in Worcester, Mass. A resident for eight years, he was a retired air freight agent with American Airlines for 25 years and a Korean War Army veteran.

He is survived by his friend and companion, Patty Hutchinson of Las Vegas; one daughter, Theresa Giannette, and one son, Steven Giannette, both of Lomita, Calif.; his mother, Palmina Giannette, and two sisters, Marian Giannette and Rosemary Fitzgerald, all of Worcester; four brothers, John Giannette of Worcester, Robert Giannette of Tampa, Fla., Ralph Giannette of Torrance, Calif., and Joseph Giannette of Las Vegas; and one grandchild.

Visitation is scheduled 4-8 p.m. Friday in Davis Paradise Valley Funeral Home, 6200 S. Eastern Ave. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Davis Paradise Valley Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Paradise Memorial Gardens.

PEARLIE HAMMOND

Pearlie Hammond, 93, of North Las Vegas died Tuesday in a local hospital. She was born Aug. 9, 1904, in Louisiana. A resident for 21 years, she was a homemaker.

She is survived by one son, John Tates III of San Diego; one daughter, Annie Hampton of Detroit; and 12 grandchildren.

Visitation will continue until 8 p.m. today in Bunkers Mortuary, 925 Las Vegas Blvd. North. Services will be 10 a.m. Friday in Bunkers Chapel. Burial will follow in Eden Vale Memorial Park.

DONALD J. HIGGS

Donald J. Higgs, 64, of Las Vegas died Saturday. He was born June 19, 1933, in Evansville, Ind. A resident for six months, he was a retired intelligence officer and Vietnam War Marine Corps veteran.

He is survived by one daughter, Celia Phillips of Savannah, Ga.; one son, Roger Higgs of Chula Vista, Calif.; four stepdaughters, Sharon Waller and Jeanne Soares, both of Las Vegas, Reene Potter and Penny Converse, both of Garden Grove, Calif., and Denise Clevinger of Scio, Ore.; one stepson, Larry Raymond of Garden Grove; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

BEATRICE LE CLAIRE

Beatrice Le Claire, 87, of Las Vegas died Tuesday in a local care center. She was born March 20, 1911, in Chicago. A resident for 11 years, she was a retired waitress.

She is survived by two sons, Norman Bowers and Melvin Bowers, both of Las Vegas; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

ROBERT DAVIS LUTTRELL

Robert Davis Luttrell, 80, of Las Vegas died Tuesday in a local hospital. He was born Jan. 22, 1918, in Chicago. A resident for 19 years, he was a tool designer in the aerospace industry and an Army veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; six daughters, Bette Roberts and Eileen Luttrell, both of Las Vegas, Sharon Baumann of Sacramento, Frances Sutterland and Susan Gaines, both of San Diego, and Kathleen Hennessey of Henderson; three sons, William MacNeil of Colorado, Robert MacNeil of Washington state and David Luttrell of Arizona; one brother, John Luttrell of Michigan; 23 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

GLADYS OSBORNE

Gladys Osborne, 84, of Las Vegas died Tuesday in a local hospital. She was born Oct. 29, 1913, in Chicago. A resident for 10 years, she was a retired bookkeeper for a wholesaler.

MELVIN PERA

Melvin Pera, 68, of North Las Vegas died April 7 in a local hospital. He was born Dec. 16, 1929, in Duluth, Minn. A resident for four years, he was a retired computer consultant for a magazine and a Korean War Navy veteran.

He is survived by his friend, Robert Weiss of North Las Vegas; and two cousins, Leo N. Seikkula of Lakeview, Minn., and Margaret Kinetz of Duluth.

A memorial service will be 10 a.m. April 25 in St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. Graveside services will be 10:45 a.m. April 29 in Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Boulder City. Palm Mortuary, 7400 W. Cheyenne Ave., is handling arrangements.

DOROTHY E. RUDOLPH

Dorothy E. Rudolph, 93, of Las Vegas died Monday in Las Vegas. A resident for 12 years, she was born Dec. 22, 1904, in Pittsburgh.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Friday in Paradise Memorial Gardens. Davis Paradise Valley Funeral Home, 6200 S. Eastern Ave., is handling arrangements.

MARY E. SACKETT

Mary E. Sackett, 77, of Las Vegas died Tuesday in Las Vegas. She was born March 21, 1921, in Moapa. A lifelong resident of Southern Nevada, she was a homemaker.

She is survived by two sons, Andy Sackett and Gail Varela, both of Las Vegas; two brothers, Joe Rogers of California and Merlin Howell of Nevada; three sisters, Licielle Henry of California and Helen Tom and Juanita Kinlichinie, both of Nevada; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled at 5 p.m. Friday at the Las Vegas Paiute Indian Colony. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Chief Tecopa Cemetery, Pahrump.

MARY LEE SOUTHERN

Mary Lee Southern, 68, of Las Vegas died Monday in a local hospital. She was born Oct. 1, 1929, in Newellton, La. A resident for 47 years, she was a homemaker.

She is survived by five daughters, Mildred Cowart, Zaneda Annette Southern, Audrey Lorraine Southern, Michelle Lavolle and Felicia Gaines, and two sons, Curtis Lee Crockette and Rickey Bernard Southern, all of Las Vegas; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled 2-7 p.m. today in Palm Mortuary, 1325 N. Main St. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday in Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.

THOMAS VASQUEZ

Thomas Vasquez, 45, of Las Vegas died Monday in Las Vegas. He was born Sept. 30, 1952, in Lordsburg, N.M. A resident for 36 years, he was a bellman at the Aladdin hotel-casino for 28 years and a 1970 Rancho High School graduate.

He is survived by his wife, Jolynn; two daughters, Julie Vasquez of Minnesota and Sara Vasquez of Las Vegas; his mother, Virginia Vasquez of Las Vegas; six brothers, Raul Vasquez, Ruben Vasquez, Alfred Vasquez, Lawerence Vasquez, John Vasquez and Jerry Vasquez, and four sisters, Maria Enno, Rose Borrego, Betsy Vasquez and Cecelia Vasquez, all of Las Vegas.

Visitation will continue until 7:30 p.m. today in Desert Memorial Cremation and Burial Society, 1111 Las Vegas Blvd. North. A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Friday in Desert Memorial Cremation and Burial Society.

HUGH HOWARD WALTERS

Hugh Howard Walters, 94, of Las Vegas died Monday in Las Vegas. He was born Feb. 24, 1904, in Oregon. A resident for four years, he was a postmaster.

He is survived by his wife, Toni Lee; and one brother, George Walters of California.

Visitation is scheduled 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. services Saturday in Hites Funeral Services, 438 W. Sunset Road, Henderson. A private burial will follow.

DONALD MASON WEATHERS

Donald Mason Weathers, 56, of Las Vegas died Tuesday in Las Vegas. He was born Aug. 22, 1941, in California. A resident for two years, he was a casino floor technician and a Navy veteran.

Burial will be in California. Hites Funeral Services, 438 W. Sunset Road, Henderson, is handling arrangements.

CHARLES JOSEPH YOUNG SR.

Charles Joseph Young Sr., 80, of Las Vegas died Sunday in a local health care center. He was born July 21, 1917, in Morley, Mich. A resident for 33 years, he was a retired state government plumber, a World War II and Korean War Navy veteran who retired after 22 years of active duty, a lifetime member of the Clark County Gem Collectors and a member of the Fleet Reserve.

He is survived by his wife, Isabel; two daughters, Patricia Butcher and Elizabeth Schultz, and three sons, Charles J. Young Jr., Robert P. Howe and Thomas J. Young, all of Las Vegas; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave.
