The 380,000-square-foot center is the latest entry by Las Vegas resorts seeking a share of the city's booming convention and trade show market.
The Rio Hotel and Circus Circus Enterprises are also working on major convention center projects.
The centers are aimed at bringing in more traffic in the early part of the week, when room occupancy is traditionally lower.
The MGM conference center will be linked to a 1,500-room Marriott hotel that is scheduled to open in 2000 behind the MGM.
