Former justice of the peace discharged from probation

U.S. District Judge Philip Pro granted Ahlstrom's request for early probation Tuesday, noting prosecutors offered no opposition.

Pro said probation officers had no objection because Ahlstrom had fully complied with all provisions of his probation.

U.S. District Judge Earl Carroll of Phoenix sentenced Ahlstrom in May 1997 to two years probation and ordered him to complete 330 hours of community service.

Ahlstrom and a friend were named in a September 1995 indictment after federal authorities recorded conversations in which the pair arranged to buy saguaro cactuses and ocotillo plants from Arizona.

The former justice of the peace, now 53, pleaded guilty in March 1996 to a felony count of purchasing a plant taken in violation of federal law.
