Discovery of human remains partially closes Mount Rose Highway
Thursday, April 16, 1998 | 11:26 a.m.
A human skull lay near the edge of the road, apparently dragged there by a coyote or some other animal. The firefighter flagged down an off-duty Nevada Highway Patrol officer, who called in the Washoe County sheriff's office.
The westbound lane of the highway was shut down and search and rescue teams began retrieving additional bones from a canyon along the road about two miles above Reindeer Lodge.
The remains were fully decomposed and there was no immediate indication of a cause of death. A forensic investigation will attempt to determine more information about the victim.
