13-year-old killed, friend injured in fatal joyride

The dead girl, identified as Rachel Freed, was driving the truck about 3 a.m. in the Blue Diamond area when she lost control of the vehicle on State Route 159 near Blue Diamond and flipped the truck over.

The victim, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the truck and died after being taken to University Medical Center.

The other girl, 13-year-old Alexis Grangaard, was wearing her seat belt and remained in the vehicle. She was taken to University Medical Center, where she is listed in stable condition.

Police cited speed and a lack of driving experience as the cause of the accident.

Both girls lived in Blue Diamond, a rural community southwest of Las Vegas.
