SWAT officers fail to find gunman after man wounded

Metro Police activated their SWAT team Tuesday evening while a search was underway for a mystery gunman who wounded a man in the leg.

A motorist traveling along Washington Avenue about 5 p.m. notified police that a wounded man was lying in the road, just east of Seventeenth Street.

Paramedics transported the man to University Medical Center to treat the wound, which passed through his left leg, Metro spokesman Lt. Rick Alba said. Meanwhile officers searching the area were led to believe that a suspect could be hiding inside 883 N. Seventeenth and began evacuating residences neighboring the property.

Two men inside the single-story home on Seventeen surrendered to police and were taken into custody for questioning, yet conflicting statements from the men complicated Metro's ability to determine if anyone else could be inside the home.

The Special Weapons and Tactics team was called in about 5:30 p.m. and began taking position around the house while simultaneously assisting in the neighborhood evacuation.

SWAT entered the home about 7:30 p.m., but after a room-to-room search found no one inside.

Police remained late Tuesday without a suspect in the shooting or solid details of how the unidentified victim had been shot.
