Columnist Peter Benton: Children benefit from clinic

PETER BENTON is a local golfer. His column appears Wednesdays.

IN CONJUNCTION with the Las Vegas Senior Classic by TruGreen ChemLawn and the Senior PGA Tour, Christina's Smile, a mobile children's dental clinic conceived in 1989 by Dr. Richard Garza, will provide free care to needy local children.

Children selected by Clark County School District nurses will be the recipients of this free service on April 20-22 from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Fashion Show Mall.

Dr. Garza, who treated scores of underprivileged children while in practice in Austin, Texas, relies upon local dentists and assistants to volunteer their time to deliver quality treatment at the mobile clinics.

It is anticipated that approximately 120 underprivileged local youngsters will benefit from this three-day clinic and receive dentistry valued at around $35,000.

Pay to play

The National Golf Foundation has announced that Hawaii ranks first in the nation with average in-season weekend green fees of $85.70.

Nevada has the dubious distinction of charging the second-highest rates, which average at $84 per round. Rounding out the top five are Arizona, $66.70; California, $57; and Colorado, $51.90.

President's Cup

In the recent President's Cup Championship at the Las Vegas Country Club, Byron LeBow captured top honors with a two-round net total of 132. The diminutive Laurie Durant, after two scintillating rounds for a 36-hole score of 134, was crowned ladies champion.

Keith Gallaher and his 140 narrowly won the first flight over Frank Larsen, 141, and Brad Wallin, 142.

Second-flight honors went to Larry Paluzzi and his fine 133. Dan Shapiro was a distant second at 138. Sharing third with 140s were Kent McBeath and Jim Brown.

Allan Vogel was the third flight victor with 135. Big Dan Ayala placed second at 139, while Bill Reagan was third with 141.

Keith Fleming prevailed in the fourth flight, coming in with a 137. Ken Hirate's 140 was second with third place going to Norm Brown, 141.

In the competitive ladies flight, Pat Corona's 146 edged Nike Devine, Linda Jablon and Kaz Pratt, who tied for second with 148s.

Ace of clubs

Mark DiGregorio had the thrill of registering an ace on the par-3, 191-yard 12th hole at Sun City's Palm Valley course last week via an 8-iron.

Playing with DiGregorio were Joey and Robert DiGregorio along with pro Joe Lescenski.
