Plans on track for 180-bed nursing home

Groundbreaking for the $19.4 million facility is set for December.

The design phase for the facility was recently completed, and plans are moving along very well, according to Dave Schmidt, project manager for the state Public Works Board.

The state is currently awaiting formal notification regarding federal funding that is expected to amount to 65 percent of the cost. The rest of the cost has been approved by the Nevada Legislature.

The home will be located on eight acres of land at Nellis Air Force Base.

Completion is set for December 1999.

Nevada is one of only a handful of states that does not have a nursing home for veterans. There are about 118,000 veterans living in Southern Nevada. Of that total, about 85,000 are 65 or older.
