BLM authorizes water releases

John Davis, acting manager of the bureau's Lahontan Basin Area Office in Carson City, said he expects releases will be needed in April, May and June to make room for runoff in the Carson River.

The Carson River at Fort Churchill, 10 miles before the reservoir, is projected to flow at 162 percent of average during the three-month period, the Lahontan Valley News and Fallon Eagle Standard reported.

Bureau officials expect about 270,000 acre-feet of water to flow into the reservoir before July. Projections are based on the snowpack in the Carson River watershed.

Davis said precautionary releases also have started at Stampede and Boca reservoirs on the Truckee River.
