Slamming scenario

* HOW TO TELL -- Review your telephone bill carefully each month. Look for unfamiliar company names or logos. Customers can verify their communications carrier by calling 1-700-555-4141 for long distance or 1-(your area code)-700-4141 for local service.

* WHAT TO DO -- Call your selected carrier and ask to be switched back immediately. Then contact the company that slammed you and ask to be reimbursed for any excess charges over what you normally pay your regular carrier, as well as any fees involved in switching you back.

* IN THE FUTURE -- Ask for the name of the representative and the company calling with an offer to switch to another carrier. Request that all offers be sent to you in writing. Read all offers carefully before signing any form.
