Letter: City of Las Vegas serious about audits

In fact, of the 130 recommendations in the referenced audit, 88 have been resolved -- including the four specifically mentioned in your editorial. Approximately 30 are waiting for implementation of a new computer system, which will soon be operational. The remaining recommendations will not be implemented because (a) they are no longer relevant, (b) they are impractical or (c) they are not cost-beneficial.

For the last three years, the city has attempted to implement an aggressive operational audit. In fact, we often direct the audits to areas where we know there is room for improvement and not to the areas that will reliably produce a "clean" audit; but we do so knowing that the results will likely be printed out of context against the city.

Despite what we feel is unjust media criticism, city management will continue to utilize this process as a tool to improve the way we operate. The city council deserves commendation rather than criticism for encouraging this process of self-examination in the interest of good government.
