Las Vegas to replace old, damaged signs

It might become easier for residents of Las Vegas to find their way around the city in the next few months.

The city of Las Vegas will be removing and replacing hundreds of old and damaged Las Vegas street name signs.

Improved street sign installation was a directive of Mayor Jan Laverty Jones, who first mentioned the issue in her State of the City address in February. At that time, she expressed frustration at not being able to adequately see the names of streets at intersections.

About 1,350 signs will be replaced. One-third of the old dark blue street signs will be replaced with green ones. The remainder of the signs fell victim to damage such as weather and vandalism.

The City Council is expected approve supplementing the street sign budget with $26,100. The total expected to be spent on the project is $54,700. All damaged signs should be replaced by Sept. 1, 1998, officials said.
