Kenneth Johnson named chief of Capitol Police Department

CARSON CITY -- Sgt. Kenneth Johnson, an 18-year veteran with the Capitol Police Department, has been named chief of the 24-member force.

Johnson, 52, succeeds Randy Smith who was demoted to sergeant in January following allegations of irregular hiring. Johnson, who has been acting chief, will earn $45,185.

"The insight and professionalism he (Johnson) offers after 31 years in law enforcement will be a tremendous asset to the division," state Department of Motor Vehicles Director Donald Denison said when announcing Johnson's appointment.

Johnson started his law enforcement career in 1967 as an officer for the Pasadena Police Department in California and he joined the capitol police in 1987.

Capitol police are responsible for the security in state buildings in Carson City and Las Vegas.
