Editorial: State needs to get moving on program

John Yacenda, executive director of the Great Basin Primary Care Association, told a legislative subcommittee this week that the program lacks focus and is out of touch with the community. The SUN's Cy Ryan reported that Yacenda didn't get an answer when he called the program's 800 number at night; some families in Clark County went to pick up the forms at a Medicaid office but there were none in Spanish; and only one of the 27 Indian reservations have received the notices.

Charlotte Crawford, director of the state Department of Human Resources, said Yacenda's comments weren't fair. She said the state started sending out applications to school children two weeks ago and that so far 400 applications have been received. But Crawford should take the suggestions offered by Yacenda and aggressively place these applications in the communities where people live, including churches, community centers and other locations.
