Douglas County July 4th concert in trouble

The Sierra Philharmonic League says costs are going up and donations are declining.

For 14 years, the Reno Philharmonic has presented a typical pops concert combining patriotic music with some Sousa oom-pah.

But while the concert is free and always fills the park at Mormon Station in Genoa, expenses are running $14,000-$15,000 for musicians' pay and other bills, The (Gardnerville, Nev.) Record-Courier reported.

And while the 3,000 or so people who attend spend plenty on beer, soft drinks and food, that and other contributions aren't covering expenses.

Jane Gaw of the Philharmonic League said that unless things turn around, this summer's concert could be the last.
