Contractors suing management company, school district

The Clark County School District paid Parsons-Fleming-Taylor about $25 million to oversee construction of new schools. But, the district ended up not renewing the company's contract in October because 14 schools opened behind schedule.

KTNV-TV Channel 13 reported that contractors and subcontractors have now filed multiple lawsuits against Parsons and the school district, demanding overtime and double shift pay owed to them.

When construction started falling three months behind schedule, one contractor claims they were told to "use whatever manpower needed to assure the project would be ready...," KTNV reported.

Ray Willis, spokesman for the school district, said Thursday the lawsuits aren't unusual in construction. He said he did not know exactly how many lawsuits had been filed, but there were "multiple."

"It is certainly not unexpected that there might be some concerns over the demand for payment when work is being questioned," he said.

After the company finishes the schools from the 1994 bond issue, it will no longer work for the district, which could be in about two years. The district will oversee construction of the schools from the 1996 bond issue.
