Attorney General Frankie Sue Del Papa questions tobacco companies’ move

The tobacco companies vowed Wednesday to fight efforts by President Clinton and Congress to hike prices and impose tougher advertising restrictions.

Del Papa said she still expects Congress to pass legislation implementing the agreement reached by the tobacco companies and 40 of the nation's state attorneys general.

And the tobacco companies "may well reconsider their position announced today," Del Papa said. "In the meantime, we will aggressively pursue our case against the tobacco industry in Nevada."

"This announcement by the major tobacco companies has absolutely no effect on the litigation pending against them in Nevada," she added.

"We intend to pursue our lawsuit against the tobacco industry until we have achieved our goals to protect the public health of Nevadans and especially our children. We also hope to obtain reimbursement for the millions of dollars which the state must spend every year on tobacco-related illnesses."
