105-year-old veteran receives medal on birthday

The medal, commemorating the 75th anniversary of the war, was pinned on Nicholas Demas by members of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter.

He also got letters from President Clinton and from Togo West Jr., acting secretary of the Department of Veteran Affairs.

Demas began singing "Glory, Glory Hallelujah" after having a few bites of birthday cake at a party held Monday in his honor at the Fallon Convalescent Center.

"I'm the only one I know of who is 105 years old," Demas told the Lahontan Valley News and Fallon Eagle Standard. "I served my country the best way I could."

Demas was born in 1893 in Bennington, Vt. He served in the Army's Quartermaster Corps between 1917 and 1918. He moved to Fallon in 1968 and has been at the convalescent center since 1992.
