Dialogue continues over Cave Rock

Access to the craggy rock, an ancient lava plug, has been disputed by the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California, which regards it as a sacred cultural site, and rock climbers who like its steep slopes and overhang.

While the Forest Service seeks guidance on a management plan, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency is considering an application to designate Cave Rock a cultural site under the National Historic Act.

Last year, the Forest Service closed Cave Rock to climbers, but relented in the face of a possible legal challenge. In December, the Forest Service issued a modified closure order that allows rock climbing, but prohibits the installation of any new climbing bolts.

The Forest Service hoped that the two sides in the discussion could find some common ground, and are reluctant to end the dialogue unless an impasse is reached.

Thursday's meeting starts at 6 p.m. in the Kahle Community Center.
