Columnist Peter Benton: Durant, Weigman team up to take Ladies tournament

LAURIE DURANT and Chuck Weigman won overall low-gross honors in the Las Vegas Country Club's Ladies Choice Golf Tournament.

Durant/Weigman's score of 9-under 63 was reflective of the way their games complimented each another in a demanding yet fun-filled format.

The first six holes were a Chapman/Scotch, the second six were best ball, and the final six a scramble.

Mary Weidman and Bruce Ashworth were second with 66. The teams of Gloria Carson/Coe Power and Carol Oshins/Mike Singer shared third with 67s.

The Weidman/Ashworth duo captured low net in the Blarney flight with a score of 59.15. Durant and Weigman followed with a 60.4 while third at 61.4 was Carson/Coe Power and Carol Oshins/Mike Singer.

Oshins and Singer were victorious in the Celtic flight coming in with a net 59. Marlene Wheeler and John Babcock were next with 61.4 while third place went to Rene Raynes/Steve Yamaguchi at 63.65.

Linda Jablon and Larry Fernandez ham-and-egged it perfectly in winning the Leprechaun flight with a low-net score of 56.4. Second at 63.75 was the Clyde Serfustini/Dan Ayala duo with third place going to Angela Williams and Jack Pieper at 64.5.

The mother-son tandem of Sharon and Scott Ickes took the Shamrock flight with a net score of 58.85 was the mother-son team of Sharon and Scott Ickes. Paulette Morris and Byron LeBow placed second at 61.85 with third spot going to Larren Buckley and Bob Morrow with 62.15.

* SINGH BLADE: By making the Doral-Ryder Open cut, Vijay Singh extended to 50 his streak of consecutive cuts made. Along with having the longest current streak, Singh ranks sixth on the PGA Tour's all-time list. Immediately ahead of Singh is Tom Kite who made 53 cuts in a row. Farther ahead are Dow Finsterwald (72), Hale Irwin (86) and Jack Nicklaus (105). The all-time leader is Byron Nelson, who was in the money 113 consecutive times.

* HOGAN'S A HERO: The Nevada State Seniors Golf Club's March tournament, an individual low gross and low net event, was played under great weather conditions at the Wildhorse Golf Club. Jim Hogan's 76 took low gross honors in the first flight, while Ralph Harden and his 67 captured low net. Wally Kitchen followed closely at 68. Bob Wertman was the second flight low gross victor with an 80. Danny Antonellis won low net with 68 while Bill Smith and Dick Budde shared second with 71s. Archie Groft was the low gross winner in the third flight with an 81. Gerald Vanderpool's fine 63 took low net honors, edging Angelo Morlacci and Chuck Rasch who came in with 64s. Allan Oleson's 94 took low gross in the fifth flight, while Ken Call won low gross after a sizzling 62. Bob Sweeney placed second at 65.
