People in the news for April 6, 1998

Former White House intern Monica Lewinsky toured the birthplace of U.S. democracy, turning heads in her new role as tourist. Lewinsky, whose alleged relationship with President Clinton has put her in the middle of a media frenzy, spent about an hour Sunday touring the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. Her lawyer, William Ginsburg, was close by. Flanked by a CNN camera crew and several photographers, Lewinsky couldn't avoid drawing attention amid the visitors watching the Greek Independence Day Parade. "She just came and got in line for Independence Hall like a normal visitor and took a normal tour," said Lee Dickinson, special events coordinator for Independence National Historic Park. "She was accompanied by camera crews, so any time there are camera crews around it will draw people's attention." Sometimes, "people with name recognition" give the park warning before they arrive, Dickinson said. Lewinsky didn't call ahead.

'Ally'-oops

Lisa Nicole Carson's pals still giggle over the fact that the "Ally McBeal" co-star was cast as the title role's levelheaded roommate. "My friends can't believe I'm playing the cool, calm and collected one," Carson, 28, said in the April 13 edition of People. On the hit Fox series, Calista Flockhart is an oddball, often neurotic attorney while Carson is her no-nonsense, take-no-prisoners best friend. Carson said it's not typecasting. "I write an agenda of things to do -- buy curtains, buy a pot, clean the house -- every day," she says. "Otherwise I'd be singing, acting and dreaming all day." Carson may need to keep her lists -- the actress is pretty busy these days. In addition to her work on "McBeal," Carson is also a featured performer on NBC's "ER" and has appeared in such movies as "Eve's Bayou" and "Devil in a Blue Dress."

Being Cage-y

Is Nicolas Cage leaving for Las Vegas? Nah, just hangin' in west L.A. The Oscar-winning actor, who stars with Meg Ryan in the upcoming movie "City of Angels," has bought a west Los Angeles home for just under the asking price of $7 million, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday, citing unidentified sources. Cage, 34, will also play Superman as an alienated outsider in an upcoming film by Tim Burton, and he will be in "Snake Eyes," a crime thriller by Brian De Palma to be released in August. Cage starred last year in the action movies "Face/Off" and "Con Air." He won the 1995 best actor Academy Award for his work in "Leaving Las Vegas."

Cowboy Ronnie

Former President Ronald Reagan has been memorialized with a larger-than-life bronze statue at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame. The statue by sculptor Glenna Goodacre depicts Reagan in the denim garb he was so often seen wearing at his California ranch. A pair of gloves flop out from his back pocket and the figure extends his hand as if to greet someone. Reagan's daughter, Maureen, said the statue was "very Ronald Reagan." The former president, who is suffering from Alzheimer's disease, did not attend Saturday's ceremony at the 37th annual Western Heritage Awards.
